TKC!
Genuine community is one of the most natural, yet difficult things to find in life. Not that long ago, community naturally happened around common locations (neighborhoods, parishes, etc.), interests or stages of life. Now, what was natural has to become intentional and this means that our school community has become even more vital. As a K-12 school community in a quickly growing area, we have many differences. We come from many areas of the country (and even many parts of the world), our children span many different grades, interests and abilities and we all have a pretty broad range of backgrounds. Nonetheless, there is a critical thing that we all have in common: we value our children’s education and development as persons that we are prepared to make the sacrifice to send them to a private school. Additionally, we all think that Pinecrest is the best institutional partner to cultivate the character and talents of our sons and daughters. Despite all of our differences, this fundamental commonality gives us the potential to develop a genuine communion of parents that, along with the school, we are embarking together on the pilgrimage of bringing mature Christian adults into the world.
This commonality, however, will remain only a potential communion without two key ingredients: charity and time. Charity, the willingness to see, develop and sacrifice for the genuine good of those around us is, of course, a fruit of grace and we know that Pinecrest is a very special place where the Holy Spirit is constantly working. But charity, and the community that develops as its fruit, cannot develop without the time together.
It was great to see so many of our families a little over week ago in our spectacular overtime win against Trion and at the wonderful family picnic that PAPA hosted Sunday afternoon! At both events, though, it was even better to see the genuine joy among the students, parents and alumni that is the sign of real community. That time together is what lets us go from a collection of interests to a genuine community that supports one another in the difficult work of raising children into the adults that God intends them to be and that the world needs them to be.
In addition, one thing that struck we profoundly last year was how rich and multidimensional the fine arts program Pinecrest is at all of our grade levels. Watching just the fall unfold with performances, musicals, concerns and art shows was a constant parade of student talent and achievement in music, drama, choir and the visual arts. I also realized that I was one of the few people that got to see all that talent, as most performances and shows we attended by parents of only one grade level or, at most, of one school level.
Consequently, in discussions with the fine arts team (band, art and musical theater) we have decided to begin a new tradition at Pinecrest this year. Please mark your calendars for the evening of Friday, Dec 18th as we will be conducting a Christmas Extravaganza that will incorporate art and performances from all grade levels for the entire community in a very special evening that will allow us to come together as a community around the many talents of our students as we close the fall semester and prepare to celebrate the great feast of the Nativity.
Please stay tuned for more details in the near future and I hope to see all of you there!
